WISER THAN!

Psalm 119:97–104 NKJV
97 Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day.
98 You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies; For they are ever with me.
99 I have more understanding than all my teachers, For Your testimonies are my meditation.
100 I understand more than the ancients, Because I keep Your precepts.
101 I have restrained my feet from every evil way, That I may keep Your word.
102 I have not departed from Your judgments, For You Yourself have taught me.
103 How sweet are Your words to my taste, Sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 Through Your precepts I get understanding; Therefore I hate every false way.

David says, “Oh how I love God´s Word!”  It makes me wiser than …
Wiser than what or who?
And he offers us a list.
1. The Word of God makes me wiser than my enemies.
  • It tells me how to overcome the attack of my main enemy, the devil. (Eph. 6:10-11)
2. God´s Word warns me to forgive my enemies so that I don´t become bitter. (Mt. 6:14-15)
  • God´s Word makes me wiser than my teachers.
  • It tells me that God is the One who made the universe and all that is in it. (Genesis – Not many teachers these days saying that!
  • God´s Word teaches me mankind´s most basic frailty and flaw: sin.  (Romans 3:23)
  • The Word of the Lord warns me of the certain consequence for my flaw: death. (Romans 6:23)
  • The Word of the Lord tells me the one and only solution for the death penalty I deserve. (Romans 5:8)
  • God´s Word explains how I can receive the gift of eternal life in place of everlasting separation from God in the second death. (Romans 10:9-10)
3. God´s perfect Word makes me wiser than even learned old men, and women for that matter!
  • As David wrote in the previous stanza of this psalm, God´s Word has been standing firm FOREVER.
4. The Word of the Lord makes me wiser than those who do evil.
  • God´s Word is breathed out by God Himself (2 Timothy 3:16a)
  • God´s Word is profitable
                For doctrine
                For reproof
                For correction
For instruction in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16b)

However, God´s Word only makes us wiser if we meditate upon it.

97 Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day.
98 You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies; For they are ever with me.

To meditate means “to chew on something over and over.”

We cannot meditate on something we do not already have firmly planted in our mind.  Therefore, a prerequisite of meditation is memorization.

I hope you already know each of the Scripture references I cited above.  Each one is very basic.  We should all be able to quote them.  Can you?

Go back through the blog and quote each Scripture referenced. You may not be able to quote all of Genesis 1, but you should know some key verses in the chapter.

If you cannot quote the other verses cited, look them up.  Use some of the extra time you have at home because of the Coronavirus to memorize these basic important Scriptures that offer to make you very, very wise!  Wiser than …
